International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia 2024
The first International Day Against Homophobia was celebrated on May 17, 2005. The date of May 17 was chosen to commemorate the UN's decision to cease considering homosexuality a mental illness. Today, this day no longer focuses on homophobia, but has been extended to include biphobia, transphobia and all LGBT-phobias.
Here are some definitions by the LGBT Resource Center at the University of California San Francisco:
- Homophobia: The irrational hatred and fear of LGBTQIA+ people. Homophobia includes prejudice, discrimination, harassment, and acts of violence brought on by fear and hatred. It occurs on personal, institutional, and societal levels.
- Biphobia: fear or hatred of people who are bisexual, pansexual, or omnisexual.
- Transphobia: The fear or hatred of transgender people or people who do not meet society’s gender role expectations.
To find out more about LGBTQIA+ identities and the hate they face, we've selected a few resources to add to our Highlight on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion.
